Habit
Herb with leafy stem, 3-4 ft high
Habitat
Cultivated in many parts of south Indian states like Karnataka, Kerala and Tamilnadu
Morphology
- Stem - woody , clothed below with spongy sheaths
- Leaves- 30-60 cm long, 7.5 -10 cm wide, oblong lanceolate green, glabrous on both surface.
- Flowers- Spike, shortly peduncled, 5- 7.5 cm long. Bracts red- brown very dense.
- Fruits- Capsule, 2.5 cm in diameter, globose, red brown.
- Seeds- Many small and black.
Chemical Composition
Seeds contain volatile oil (2-8 %), oil contains cineole Terpinyl acetate, Terpineol, Borneol .
